The Resilient Christian

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” – Isaiah 43:2(NIV)

Resilience is a vital trait in our Christian journey. It is the ability to withstand challenges, adversity, and persecution while maintaining faith and hope in God. The Bible offers numerous examples and teachings on resilience, often illustrated through the lives and messages of the prophets. Prophet Isaiah spoke profoundly about what it means to be a resilient Christian through perseverance and hope.

Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV)

“…The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Isaiah’s prophecies provide us with the example of a resilient Christian, the life we should strive to embody. Trust in God’s promises, draw strength from His presence, and face each day with unwavering faith.

Doing this helps us to:

1. Receive strength from God. Isaiah 40:28-31 reminds us that God’s power and understanding are limitless. Even when we feel exhausted or overwhelmed, He provides us with strength. Thus, we place our hope and trust in Him.

2. Overcome Fear. Isaiah 41:10 tells us that fear can often be a significant barrier to resilience, but we are reassured that God is always ready to provide strength and support. This assurance helps us face challenges with courage, knowing that we are not alone and that God’s righteous right hand upholds us.

Throughout the Bible, there are several examples of resilience. There is Joseph, who continued to do God’s will even when he was thrown in prison. Esther, who spoke up for the Jews even when it placed her own life in danger, and Daniel, who prayed openly in defiance of the King’s laws. The accounts of these three should encourage us to remain steadfast in our faith.

Brethren, start each day by asking God for the strength to face whatever comes your way. Acknowledge His power and invite His presence into your daily struggles. Have confidence in the promises of God. If He said it, He will bring it to pass; trust Him. Memorise Scriptures such as  Isaiah 41:10 so that when fear arises, we can recall it and be reminded of God’s promise to uphold us. And have a place of fellowship where you have a community with whom you share your burdens and encourage one another, drawing strength from the collective faith of your community.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the words of Your prophet Isaiah, which remind us of Your boundless strength, Your ever-present help, and Your unwavering support. Help us to be resilient Christians, placing our hope and trust in You. Strengthen us in our weariness, calm our fears, and guide us through the adversities we face. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
